PLAY SOME NEW TRACKS
‘’O my god what is the matter with me?’’
These were my thoughts as I tried to make a play list on my laptop this morning. I couldn’t work out how to move the music files anywhere. So they had to stay where they were.
The fact is there is nothing wrong with me at all. These thought patterns stop me from doing the things that I want to do. I think I am lesser….. so I am. Only because I choose this lesser feeling. Sometimes.
More and more these days I am letting these stories go, finding it easier to notice when I am creating this lesser feeling. As that’s all they are….stories of feeling lesser. Ideas and stories, cultivated from a time when things didn’t go quite to plan when I was little.
I am now bigger and better placed to let these things go. Creating more easeful, healthier, neural pathways.
Some science stuff:
A neural pathway is where the brain sends electric messages from one neuron to another, along something called a synapse. When we create these pathways in the brain it’s like a digger truck moving backwards and forwards in a dirt road. Making a big ingrained track, with its chunky tyres.
Patterns of messages in the brain fire and re-fire, sometimes being hard to stop. Luckily for us the brain has the capacity to adapt to changes in an individual's environment by forming new neural connections over time.
When we start to do other things, new things that the brain is not used to, it takes a while and we can build a steady new track. That’s why we don’t like change. The brains like-
‘’Whoa give me some of that other shit; I haven’t got a track for this. Play me some of those old tunes. ‘’
Activating the sympathetic nervous system known as the fight or flight mode. Thats why we find new stuff hard and try and wriggle out of it.
When we start to send new messages along the synapses, we make different tracks building upon healthier themes, creating new neural pathways in the brain. When we practice meditation, yoga, creative expression through art, walking in nature or by the sea, we are firing off new electric messages in the brain.
By practicing these more soothing activities above, we send new messages linked to the parasympathetic nervous system, keeping us in rest or digest mode. More relaxed, more chilled, more ahhhhhhhhhhhh.
It’s all practice and noticing. Noticing when we have these self sabotaging thoughts like.
‘’OMG Whats the matter with me?’’
Realising the thought and recalibrating, liberating the pathways, forming new ones with new electric messages, reforming into thoughts of love and self acceptance.
Making a new thought:
‘’There isn’t anything wrong with you, you are super! ‘’
And moving on.
It takes a little while to get to this in place and it can come and go, however the brains adaptive potential is there.
Yoga and meditation are a very good way to start the noticing, allowing us to start firing those electric messages in a differnet direction via continuous practice and using the breath to support this. Slowing us down enough to hear what we say to ourselves, catching it and potentially getting rid of negative thought patterns.
I am teaching my first, in real life classes on Monday evenings, on the 21st Of June- Summer Solstice and onwards. I am very excited to say the least!
If you would like to come and practice yoga and meditation with me it would be my pleasure to have you there.
Come and join me on this yoga journey.
Go to my classes page to book. Or drop me a line. I would be delighted to talk to you.
Its time to start laying down some new tracks…….
